Digital Elevation Model of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, Russian Artic and SAT / Landsat MS / ArcticDEM The presented image is a visualization of a digital elevation model (DEM) of the Severnaya Zemlya (until 1926 - Land of Emperor Nicholas II) is an archipelago, Russian Arctic. This is the result of the interpretation of the land surface radar mapping data (ArticDEM, V4) and its subsequent processing using the ArcGIS Desktop v10.3.0. Severnaya Zemlya (until 1926 - Land of Emperor Nicholas II) is an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of the Taimyr Peninsula. The western shores of the archipelago are washed by the waters of the Kara Sea, and the eastern shores by the Laptev Sea. The archipelago stretches 380 kilometers from north to south and 340 kilometers from west to east. It consists of 4 large islands: Oktyabrskaya Revolyutsiya (Saint Alexandra), Komsomolets Island (Saint Mary), Bolshevik (Saint Olga), Pioneer Island (Saint Tatyana), and small ones (Schmidt, Starokadomsky, Krupskoy, Maly Taimyr (Tsarevich Alexei), Domashny Island (Saint Anastasia), etc. The area of the archipelago is about 37 thousand square kilometers. On the islands of the archipelago, sedimentary deposits of predominantly Cambrian-Permian age, to a lesser extent Jurassic-Cretaceous age, have been exposed. The islands of Pioner, Komsomolets and Oktyabrskoy Revolyutsii are composed mainly of Cambrian-Early Devonian rocks. Carboniferous and Permian deposits are thin and confined to local depressions. On Bolshevik Island, Cambrian and Ordovician deposits are mainly widespread, with rare outcrops of Carboniferous and Permian deposits. Rocks of the Cretaceous, Jurassic and Triassic ages also have a limited distribution in the southern part of the island. The peculiarities of the structure are a large anticline of northwestern extension, passing through the center of Oktyabrskoy Revolyutsii Island. Deformed sedimentary strata of the Cambrian, Lower and Middle Ordovician have been exposed in its core. The edges of this geological structure are terrigenous and carbonate strata, the age is Upper Ordovician and Devonian. The structures located to the northeast and southwest of the anticline are the synclines of Krasnaya Bay and Pioneer Island. In both of these structures, sedimentary strata of the Silurian and Middle Devonian are exposed. On the islands of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago, manifestations of granitoid magmatism are found - Ordovician, Late Permian and Triassic age. Administratively, it belongs to the Krasnoyarsk Territory of the Russian Federation. There is no permanent population on the island. 2. More than 45% of the area of Severnaya Zemlya is covered with ice. 14% of the coastline is glacial shores. There are 20 large glaciers on the archipelago. The glaciers of the islands are characterized by a dome-shaped (Ice Cap),form with a smoothly descending surface. The maximum heights of the islands are associated with the glacial surface of the glaciers: 965 meters on Oktyabrskoy Revolyutsii Island, 935 meters on Bolshevik Island, 781 meters on Komsomolets Island, 382 meters on Pioner Island and 315 meters on Schmidt Island. Where the glaciers reach the sea, the shores serve as a source of iceberg formation. The climate of the islands is Arctic. The ice-free territory of the islands is characterized by rocky placers. Even the ice-free areas of the islands of the archipelago are not rich in vegetation. 3. Multispectral images that include data outside the human-visible spectrum provide more complete information about the Earth's surface. 4. Design versions when using methods of analytical shadow relief shading, in combination with different types of hypsometric scales. GIS application tools provide researchers with ample opportunities for their interpretation, visualization, creating a more realistic image of the landscape and maps.
